Let's Keep Charlotte County a SAFE PLACE to live, work and play.

Re-Elect Sheriff Bill Prummell

As your Sheriff, it is with great honor that I announce the start of my re-election campaign to continue to serve alongside the great men and women of the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office and to continue to keep Charlotte County a great place to live, work and play.

Over the last 11 years, under my leadership, Charlotte County has continued to be one of the safest Counties in the State of Florida. During this term, we have persevered through a pandemic, a country divided with civil unrest, and the devastation of hurricane Ian. Through the hard work and dedication of my team, Charlotte County still saw reductions in crime while also meeting the quality of life needs of our community. My promise to you when elected Sheriff was to provide a great and safe place to live, work, and play, and the record shows we have done just that.  After I was elected in 2012 as your Sheriff, Charlotte County has experienced a 19.21% decrease in crime while also seeing a population boom of 40,000 plus residents and growing.

I have been a proud member of the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office for over 31 years and understand the needs and challenges of our community. During these last 11 years as your Sheriff, I have focused not only on keeping our community safe and arresting those who violate the law, but also developing partnerships with other community service providers such as Charlotte Behavior Heath Care, the Homeless Coalition, Boy's and Girl's Club, and CARE, to coordinate community resources and address the underlining cause of the problems our community is facing.

In partnership with Charlotte Behavioral Health Care, I formed our first Mental Health Unit. The focus of this unit is to develop and implement safe, proactive, and preventive methods for containing emotionally explosive situations that could lead to violence. We have recently expanded the unit, adding a paramedic to the team in partnership with Charlotte County Fire/EMS. Our Mental Health Unit provides immediate support to families following traumatic events and connects individuals with community resources to help with immediate needs such as clothing, mental health, and substance abuse services.

Recognizing that drug addiction is a health problem that has a major impact on crime, I developed my Drug Recovery Initiative, a partnership with Charlotte Behavioral Health Care, to provide free addiction treatment to those who request it. It is my goal to proactively address these underlying causes by working with our community partners to continue to keep our county one of the safest places to live in the State.

To reduce our domestic violence incidents in our county, we sought grant funded opportunities to develop a partnership with Charlotte County Center for Abuse and Rape Emergencies (CARE). This partnership evolved into the creation of our Domestic Violence Unit. This unit connects both survivors and offenders to community programs that address the underlying causes of the abuse, breaking the cycle that many offenders and their family members are struggling in. The success of these efforts has led to additional partnerships with the State Attorney's Office to draw a hard line for habitual offenders while also encouraging eligible offenders to participate in the programs.

I continue to be committed to using the latest technology to fight crime while also reducing the financial impact on the taxpayers. The implementation of intelligence-led policing principles is a key part of our success, because we take a proactive approach to enhancing public safety.  We have expanded our abilities by creating our Real Time Intelligence Center (RTIC), staffed with certified crime analysts who provide a force multiplier for road deputies to calls for service and serious incidents.  This process allows me the opportunity to empower my staff to take ownership in developing meaningful solutions to address those challenges our community is facing.

In 2021, I was privileged to be appointed as the first to chair the newly formed Commission on Mental Health and Substance Use Disorder by Governor DeSantis.  We are charged with reviewing and providing recommendations for changes and enhancements to Florida's MH/SUD system of care. To date, I have helped publish two reports with recommendations on how to make our system of care better and work for all.

I am blessed to continue to receive such strong support from our community. I am asking for your vote for Sheriff in the 2024 election so I may continue to serve and protect our community, and further advance the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office as one of the finest law enforcement agencies in the State of Florida.
